What is the procedure?

Dental veneers are thin shells, typically made of porcelain or plastic (composite), that are custom-designed to cover the front surface of teeth. They are used to improve the appearance of teeth by addressing issues such as discoloration, staining, chips, cracks, or minor misalignments. Veneers can create a more aesthetically pleasing smile by altering the color, shape, size, or length of the teeth.

There are two main materials that dental veneers are made out of Porcelain or Composite.

What are Porcelain Veneers?

• Made of a durable and stain-resistant material (porcelain).

• Can completely customise colour, shape, length and size

• Requires the removal of a small amount of enamel from the tooth's surface to accommodate the thickness of the veneer.

• Typically more resistant to stains compared to composite veneers.

• Custom-made in a dental laboratory

• Lasts many years longer than composite/plastic veneers

What are Composite Resin Veneers

• Made of a tooth-colored resin material.

• Applied directly to the tooth surface without the need for extensive enamel removal.

• Can be created in a single dental visit as they are often shaped and bonded directly onto the teeth by the dentist.

• Generally less expensive than porcelain veneers.

• May not be as resistant to staining as porcelain veneers.

• Will not last as long as porcelain veneers

• Not as strong as porcelain veneers

• Tends to chip/break more often than porcelain veneers

• Needs to be maintained more often than porcelain veneers

What are some of the risks of the procedure?

• Veneer damage: If there is an underlying clenching and grinding habit, then there is a risk of chipping/breaking of veneers. Furthermore, biting hard foods/objects can cause damage to the veneer

• Temporaries:during the construction of the porcelain veneers, there will be temporary veneers placed onto your teeth. These temporaries can stain, chip and need replacement

• Irreversible Procedure: The process of placing veneers often involves the removal of a small amount of enamel from the tooth's surface to accommodate the thickness of the veneer. This enamel removal is irreversible, and it means that the affected teeth will always require some form of restoration.

• Sensitivity: Some patients can experience some sensitivity after the preparation of the veneers,this is usually transient in nature. 

• Colour stability of neighbouring teeth: although the teeth with veneers tend to stay quite stable in color, the neighboring teeth (that do not have veneers) can stain and change as you get older. Thus some consideration into matching colors/shape/length will be needed in the future. 

Replacement: Unfortunately, veneers have a lifespan and will need to be replaced after a number of years. How often you will need to replace them depends on the material you choose, your oral hygiene practices and personal habits.
